What ping measures
Ping is commonly shown as a round-trip time in milliseconds. Distance, routing, Wi-Fi retransmissions and congestion all add delay.
Why jitter matters
Jitter is the variation between latency samples. A steady 45 ms connection can feel better than one jumping between 15 and 120 ms because real-time applications can plan around consistency.
- Low jitter: speech and movement arrive steadily
- High jitter: calls break up and games may stutter
- Packet buffering can hide some variation but adds delay
How to improve latency
Use Ethernet or strong Wi-Fi, choose a nearby service region, stop saturating uploads, and enable smart queue management on a compatible router. A faster plan alone does not always reduce delay.
Why tools report different ping
Every test server sits in a different place and follows a different network route. Compare results to the same server when tracking changes, and test the actual game or service when diagnosing one specific application.
