Check whether the problem is local
Run a test on two devices. If one is slow and the other is fine, investigate that device. If both are slow on Wi-Fi, move close to the router or test over Ethernet.
- Restart the affected app or device
- Pause background updates and backups
- Move closer to the access point
- Compare a wired test when possible
Look for Wi-Fi interference
Walls, neighbouring networks, microwaves and crowded 2.4 GHz channels can reduce speed. A 5 GHz or 6 GHz connection is often faster at short range, while 2.4 GHz reaches farther.
Test at another time
If performance drops mainly in the evening, neighbourhood or provider congestion may be involved. Repeated tests at consistent locations give stronger evidence than one bad result.
Know when to contact your provider
If multiple wired tests remain far below your plan after restarting the modem, collect dates and results, then contact the provider. Ask whether there is an outage, line fault or provisioning issue.
