Why Ethernet is more consistent
A wired link is not competing with neighbouring wireless networks and is less affected by walls. It typically delivers steadier throughput, ping and jitter.
When Wi-Fi is the better choice
Phones, tablets and portable computers need wireless access. Strong 5 GHz or 6 GHz Wi-Fi near a modern access point can comfortably support demanding everyday use.
- Prefer 5 GHz or 6 GHz at short range
- Place the router in an open, central location
- Use mesh nodes with wired backhaul when possible
- Avoid hiding the router behind a television or cabinet
Run the comparison
Test over Ethernet, then test Wi-Fi from the same room. If the wired result reaches your expected plan but Wi-Fi does not, focus on placement, channel use or access-point capability.
Check the cable and ports
A damaged cable or a 100 Mbps port can cap a wired result. Confirm that the device negotiates a gigabit or faster link when testing a high-speed plan.
